Mirko Daneluzzo, Michele Daneluzzo and Cristian Li Voi from United Kingdom

Nyxo is a Design Studio founded in 2015 by Mirko and Michele Daneluzzo. The company operates through design investigations of different types and scale, research and teaching, from industrial and product design to architecture.

Our mission is to push the boundaries of design within the client's needs. Our practice is a place for challenging the way we think about design and the ecologies in which we are immersed. Context, Matter and Technology are the three concerns of our research. We are interested in the mechanism of interaction of phenomena, producing indeterministic forms able to include different realities.

DESIGN APPROACH

Our work is often informed by experimenting with concepts and techniques outside the profession, coupling science with aesthetics, ecology with politics and simulation along with the narration.

The team’s focus is on the articulation and management of intricate scenarios, both in the design and fabrication processes, using digital computational tools: understanding the stratification of the information and exploiting digital simulations to find new structural and aesthetic languages.

Our projects are often informed by mapping and transforming of imperceptible forces, mingling Information Technology and unconscious experience, where the glue is the ability of the Information Tool, to transcribe heterogeneous codes.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where company/ individuals have been involved?

The studio is characterized by a heterogeneous production, the project typologies range from experimental limited edition objects to serial products, from small pavilions to public buildings. The contamination of knowledge coming from different fields, from material systems to fabrication techniques, is the lymph for our next projects.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is a cultural practice, an expression of desires that brings into physical form cultural values. It is an interface between the people and the environment, with the capacity to affect how people feel the world, how people feel themselves and other people. Architecture is a device, that deals mainly with the relationship between people in terms of space and presence, in terms of bodies, but Architecture is not necessary a building. For us, the role of architecture is to build up devices able to re-define ourselves, able to provoke, to challenge us.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

We participate in architecture vision competitions because it is a kind of training session with feedback. It is that moment to explore different methodological scenarios and apply them in a specific context. It is an excuse to force you to reset your personal agenda, to rebalance your focus and objectives. And the competition is an environment in which to test the concept, the idea, within a specific community.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

The advice is to profit from the specific situation to talk about your agenda. It could be a moment of reflection about your work: it is always precious to re-think about what we do and re-organize our ambitions.
